Technologies of superhigh pressures, functional structured ceramic composites and dispersed nanomaterials
Since 1986 the group, and since 2005 the Department of the ISM NASU, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. T. Prikhna engaged in research devoted to material science of superconducting materials such as MgB2 , Y123-, Bi2212-, Bi2223-based structural type high- temperature superconductors and Me123 (Me=Y, Nd, Sm) –based melt-textured ceramics. The main activity is aimed at establishing correlations between preparation conditions (usually under high and elevated pressures), materials structure (phase composition, nanostructural inhomogeneities and defects), superconducting characteristics (transition temperature, critical current density, fielded of irreversibility, upper critical field, trapped magnetic field, ac losses, quenching currents, etc) and mechanical properties (fracture toughness, microhardness, bending strength). The Department deals also with development of new materials and components based on the mentioned above superconducting compounds. It is also fabricating components from these materials for superconducting electromotors and inductive fault current limiters.
In the last 5 years the Department engaged in MgB2 thing films and Josephson junctions study, and high pressure treatment of MgB2 wires.
